POSITION SUMMARY
PAC GROUP LLC and Partners is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Sewing Machine Operator to support U.S. Marine Corps uniform alteration, repair, and finishing requirements.
The Sewing Machine Operator is responsible for performing precise alterations, repairs, modifications, and finishing work on U.S. Marine Corps uniforms and related garments using industrial sewing equipment and established garment-alteration techniques.
This position directly supports military readiness by ensuring uniforms are properly fitted, professionally finished, and completed in accordance with applicable Marine Corps standards, specifications, work orders, and customer requirements.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent sewing skills, craftsmanship, attention to detail, manual dexterity, reliability, and the ability to work efficiently in a structured, fast-paced military environment.
The Sewing Machine Operator will work closely with fitters, alteration personnel, supervisors, customer-service personnel, and other team members to ensure garments are accurately altered, inspected, completed, and returned to customers within established deadlines.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Sewing and Garment Alterations
- Operate industrial sewing machines, including straight-stitch, overlock, blind-hem, bar-tack, and other specialized equipment.
- Perform alterations and repairs on U.S. Marine Corps uniforms, including trousers, jackets, shirts, dress uniforms, and related garments.
- Perform hemming, tapering, shortening, lengthening, resizing, seaming, patching, mending, and other garment alterations.
- Perform zipper replacement, button replacement, fastener installation, and other garment repairs.
- Attach, remove, replace, or reposition insignia, name tapes, rank insignia, patches, buttons, and other uniform components.
- Ensure insignia and other uniform components are positioned accurately and consistently in accordance with applicable requirements.
- Perform hand sewing and finishing techniques when required.
- Work with different types of fabrics, garment materials, seams, fasteners, and uniform components.
- Make precise alterations while maintaining the original construction, appearance, and integrity of the garment.
- Complete work orders accurately and within established production and turnaround requirements.
Work Orders and Production
- Read and interpret work orders, alteration instructions, measurements, specifications, and customer requests.
- Verify garment information and alteration requirements before beginning work.
- Take or work from accurate garment measurements as required.
- Determine appropriate sewing techniques and machine settings for different garment types and materials.
- Organize work according to established priorities and production schedules.
- Meet daily production and turnaround-time requirements while maintaining high-quality workmanship.
- Prioritize urgent, mission-essential, ceremonial, or special uniform requirements as directed.
- Communicate promptly with supervisors when work cannot be completed within established timelines.
- Assist team members during periods of increased workload.
Quality Control
- Inspect garments before beginning alterations to identify existing damage, defects, stains, missing components, or other conditions.
- Inspect garments during the alteration process to ensure measurements and sewing are accurate.
- Conduct final inspections of completed garments for proper fit, appearance, stitching, placement, and workmanship.
- Identify loose stitching, uneven seams, improper measurements, damaged materials, or other quality issues.
- Correct workmanship issues before garments are returned to customers.
- Ensure completed garments meet established customer, contract, quality, and uniform requirements.
- Maintain a consistent level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Properly operate industrial sewing machines and related equipment.
- Set up machines for different garment types, fabrics, thread, and sewing applications.
- Thread machines and replace needles as necessary.
- Adjust machine tension, stitch length, and other basic settings as required.
- Perform routine cleaning and basic preventive maintenance of sewing equipment.
- Identify equipment malfunctions or conditions that may affect quality or safety.
- Report equipment problems and maintenance requirements to supervisory personnel.
- Maintain sewing tools and equipment in a clean, organized, and serviceable condition.
- Follow all equipment operating procedures and manufacturer safety requirements.
Materials and Supplies
- Properly use thread, needles, fabric, fasteners, zippers, buttons, patches, and other sewing materials.
- Monitor supplies needed to perform assigned work.
- Notify supervisors of material shortages or supply requirements.
- Minimize unnecessary material waste while maintaining quality.
- Properly store tools, supplies, and materials when not in use.
- Maintain an organized workstation to promote efficiency and safety.
Customer Service
- Provide professional, courteous, and responsive customer service to U.S. Marine Corps personnel.
- Communicate professionally with customers regarding alterations, special requests, fit concerns, and garment requirements.
- Handle customer uniforms and personal property with care and accountability.
- Maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with military personnel, supervisors, coworkers, and other customers.
- Address customer concerns within established procedures and escalate issues to supervisory personnel when appropriate.
- Protect customer information and maintain appropriate confidentiality and discretion.
Teamwork and Communication
- Collaborate with fitters, rippers, alteration personnel, supervisors, customer-service representatives, and other staff.
- Communicate clearly regarding garment status, alteration requirements, quality issues, and potential delays.
- Support coworkers when workload or production requirements increase.
- Participate in cross-training and develop knowledge of related operational functions.
- Contribute to a positive, professional, respectful, and mission-focused work environment.
- Follow direction from supervisors and contract management personnel.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of Team PAC GROUP LLC and its customer.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of professional sewing experience, preferably in a commercial, tailoring, uniform, military, government, or alteration environment.
- Demonstrated experience operating industrial sewing machines.
- Proficiency with one or more industrial sewing machine types.
- Demonstrated ability to perform garment alterations and repairs.
- Experience with hemming, tapering, seaming, patching, resizing, zipper replacement, and garment finishing.
- Ability to perform basic hand-sewing techniques.
- Ability to work with a variety of fabrics and garment materials.
- Ability to read and follow work orders, written instructions, measurements, and specifications.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to inspect completed work and identify defects or quality concerns.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience altering or repairing U.S. Marine Corps uniforms.
- Previous experience working with military uniforms or military personnel.
- Experience working on a U.S. military installation.
- Familiarity with Marine Corps uniform components, insignia, rank, name tapes, patches, and ceremonial uniforms.
- Experience working in a military uniform shop, tailor shop, alteration facility, government environment, or commercial garment operation.
- Experience operating multiple types of industrial sewing equipment.
- Experience working in a production environment with established quality and turnaround-time requirements.
- Familiarity with military uniform standards and garment construction.
