Position Overview
The Human Factors SME analyzes operator workload, usability, human-machine interaction, decision quality, training burden, and organizational design. This role makes sure assessments of emerging capabilities account for how real people will understand, use, trust, and sustain the system.

Why This Role Matters
Mission performance depends on more than the technology. It also depends on workload, usability, training, and how people work with machines. This expertise helps the Assessments team identify operator limitations and recommend practical changes to procedures and training.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Human Factors SME will:

  • Assess workload, situational awareness, interface design, alerting, task allocation, staffing, training, and human-machine teaming considerations.
  • Develop or recommend human-performance measures such as decision time, error rate, workload, intervention frequency, and training demand.
  • Support operator observation, interviews, surveys, REX/event assessments, and evidence synthesis.
  • Identify non-materiel implications for roles, responsibilities, training, procedures, organization, and policy.
  • Contribute SME findings directly to CARs, CONOPS, CONEMPs, TTPs, and transition recommendations.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 6+ years of relevant experience in human factors, human-systems integration, cognitive engineering, UX/usability, training analysis, human-machine teaming, or a related discipline.
  • Ability to design practical measures and translate human-performance findings into operational recommendations.
  • Strong analytical writing and facilitation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in military or other high-consequence operational environments.

Team-Wide Expectation
Every JT&E Support Team member helps develop and refine non-materiel operational products, including TTPs, CONOPS, CONEMPs, CARs, and related decision-support products, as appropriate to the role.

Work Environment

  • Supports OUSW(R&E), Prototyping & Experimentation, Assessments, and APEX [confirm this applies to this role].
  • Collaborative, cross-functional project pod environment working alongside government, military, engineering, analytical, and industry partners.
