Number of Positions: 3 Full-Time
Contract Duration: 5 years

Position Summary

The contractor shall provide qualified Boiler Plant Operators (BPO) to support 24/7 utility plant operations at the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) – Nashville VA Medical Center. The Boiler Plant Operator ensures the safe and continuous operation of the medical center’s high-pressure steam plant and associated systems to provide reliable environmental and utility services.

Work Schedule

  • Standard work week: 40 hours per week
  • Emergency coverage: additional 30 hours per position, as needed
  • Emergency shifts may include: 0800–1600, 1600–2400, 2400–0800
  • Emergency coverage must be available within 24 hours of a call
  • Emergency shifts do not count toward the regular 40-hour work week
  • Work on Federal holidays as scheduled

Training Requirement

  • 90 days of onsite training required before independent work (per VHA Directive 1810)

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience installing, servicing, operating, and maintaining high-pressure steam boilers (up to 2,500 HP)
  • Knowledge of temperature monitoring, system support, and maintenance standards

Required Training / Certifications

  • OSHA 10
  • Safety Testing / BEI Video Training (onsite prior to independent work)
  • AutoFlame, AERCO, Direct Logic, C-More Factory Training
  • Confined Space Entry
  • VHA “Safe Steaming” Course
  • 360 Training – Boiler Operator Certification

Required Equipment Knowledge

  • Cleaver-Brooks high-pressure boilers (maintenance, repair, safety testing, daily logging, alarms)
  • Deaerator tanks and chemical treatment systems
  • Hot well tanks and pumps

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Start-up and shutdown of boiler systems
  • Operate plant equipment and controls
  • Collect, record, and document operating data
  • Perform routine maintenance and prepare equipment for inspections
  • Operate and test safety devices and control equipment
  • Operate emergency generators
  • Monitor facility utility systems
  • Perform monthly preventive maintenance (PMs)
  • Other duties as directed

General Contractor Requirements

  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Must comply with Service Contract Act (SCA)
  • Complete VA onboarding and training prior to independent work
  • Support 24/7 operations and emergency response

Hourly Salary

  • Hourly Rate: $50.00/hr
